PwdByAkismet If you are using Commentor with Waegis like I do, you probably got email about Waegis suspending services for uncertain time this coming Friday (September 4th). Waegis served me well all this time and blocked hundreds of spam comments helping to keep this site reasonably clean. I hope it will find a way to get back soon, meanwhile you might want to flip the switch and start using Akismet as your primary anti-spam service. Here what I did to get Akismet up and running.

WpEmailFirst, go to Wordpress.com and register for free account. You don’t have to use it, but it comes with free Akismet application key. You’ll get email confirmation with key in it as shown in the picture on the left.

Once you got a key, go to Commentor and set it up to use Akismet filling in the key you got in the email.

You should be all set now. One little thing you might want to change (and that is if you are using spam counter control as in the title picture of this post) is a wording on counter control. It is hardcoded in the "~/User controls/Commentor/SpamCounter.ascx" - FTP to your site and change it to start count from the current date. In my case, it is “since August 30, 2009”.

Thank you so much for making Commentor! I've recently added it to a couple of my blogs that have been having a real problem with comment spam and it provides a great way to moderate messages. Haven't been seeing any blocks by Askiment yet but the interface alone that you've provided has saved me soooo much time.

Please do keep up the good work!

I'm seeing too many incorrect approvals by Askimet. If I turn off using either of these services, what is the default behavior? Does it default to the moderating setting in BE.NET or does it just approve everything that goes through?

In my experience accuracy is somewhere around 90% which is pretty good. By default everything goes through if moderation is off and all blocked if moderation on. Akismet just automatically approves comments if it thinks they legit.

I have set up Commentor in the way you've recommended but it's not stopping spam at all.  Is there a secondary program I can use to help screen comments and keep them from automatically posting on my blog?

You probably did not turn moderation on. In the second version of commentor, moderation should be turned on and Akismet will act as automated approver. Instructions are here: http://rtur.net/blog/post/2009/02/16/Commentor-e28093-new-version.aspx
