BlogEngine.net and where YOU want it to go

26. December 2009 22:03 by rtur.net in BlogEngine  //  Tags:   //   Comments (17)

This poll is not official and may be a little early, but it will provide BlogEngine team with some ideas on where we all, as a community, want to move. Are we looking for Wordpress.net? NewCrazyCool.net? Something in between? Please share your opinions and thoughts, it's all greatly appreciated. More we know, easier it is to make decisions and change gears. You can vote either using poll in the side bar or following the link. Feel free to drop a comment if you think of other options or just want to let everybody know what's on your mind. Don't be too harsh though, it still Christmas ;)

Here are the top three items my wish list:

1) Move BlogEngine.NET to ASP.NET MVC and start adding unit tests
2) Support for posting to the blog via e-mail
3) Support for xcopy/ftp deployment of blog posts and resources

You can do emails easily, see my previous post. Not sure what did you mean with "xcopy for posts", please clarify.

My biggest request is an image library/photo gallery that's part of the core utilizing .NET's capabilities.

Resource manager plus simple gallery would be a nice addition, agree.

I think an integrated Photo Gallery is the most missing component in BE.NET.

It would be nice to be able to simply upload images to the server through FTP and have BE.NET to:
- read image metadata tags to get photo title, description, date taken, etc
- create inital sort order of images based on either date taken or file name [selectable option]
- create low-res version of images for thumbnails
- create mid-res version of images to display screen-size slide show
- allow users to download original high-res images for print [selectable option]
- allow editor or admin to change order of images if needed
- allow editor to easily include image or image gallary in a blog post or a page

Currently, I use Slide Show from ASP.NET Ajax Control Toolkit. I extended this control to automate slide show building using image metadata and allow for image downloads. We could start from that toolkit control or (probably better for future) based it off Silverlight...

Better and improved customization of theme.
Now, the form comment is not fully customizable and it's hard coded in the source.

Oncoming task is to make BE fully IIS SEO toolkit compliant, it would make sense to add granularity to HTML output that core library produces as part of this task.

How about adding a CAPTCHA to every form, including comments?  It is quite simple.  This one here works quite nice.

My biggest wish is to make it more SEO friendly. There is a lot of duplicate content. You can reach a lot by blocking directories etc. on the robots.txt. Further to clean up the code should be nice to.

A multi language blog (multiple blog) would be nice to. I live in the Netherlands close to the Belgium border. In a circle of 100 miles around my hometown 4 languages are spoken. If you want to add the right Meta tags for each language a multiple blog is necessary. I have seen something similar from designasp.net, which is nice. However it’s  not possible to do it in the most seo-friendly way. SEO is my way of living, that’s why.

It's just not mature enough for me compared to WordPress. I used it for a year or so and just found myself "putting up" with various things that WordPress takes for granted.

Mads does a great great job with this system but it's still in it's infancy I think.

How about the elusive "multi-blogs from a single install"?

I will be nice to have various screencasts on how to do various things in blog engine. Also one on the architecture of the application. It is very difficult to go from the wiki and understand how to customize BE beyond creating themes. I think it will significantly increase the adoption of the platform. As it stands now, you have to hit several sites and dig through various forums to understand and complete simple tasks.
